COST GUIDELINES

These guidelines are an indication only - each user must discuss specific arrangements when first registering to use the unit, AND when preparing grant proposals involving use of the facilities.


2009 HOURLY RATES
Operator training as required- no additional charge

ELECTRON MICROSCOPES Other Instruments
University-based staff and research students (ANU or other Tertiary Education Institutions)
$25 per electron microscope hour or as arranged, plus consumables.
Note that normal daytime SEM sessions are booked for a minimum 3.5 hrs                      
Leica Confocal Microscope $15


CSIRO,  ANU staff undertaking consultancy work $60

Commercial work $230 or by arrangement
TEM Negatives
$4 per plate

On some electron microscopes,  charges may be negotiated or possibly waived for users from the ANU or other universities who are using the Unit for research purposes and who do not have any additional funds.
2009 SERVICE WORK RATES
Service work is not perfomed for students, but there is no charge for assistance and training in specimen preparation, sectioning etc,  except consumables,  for ANU staff and students.
Standard sectioning resin-embedded biological material $25 per block includes coated Cu grids, staining. Other grids - BYO or at cost.
Sectionins for immunolabelling
or processing of samples and sectioning
$50 per block

Standard Biological fixation, infiltration with LR White or Araldite-Epon, polymerisation. $60-80 per vial, up to 6 vials per batch.
Normal processing runs should be scheduled Monday to Thursday
No guarantees, but if our procedures are unsuccessful, no charge, or we repeat.
If your procedures are used unsuccessfully -  no refund.
Freeze-fracture $500 per day plus TEM hourly charges. Minimum 1 day.
Cryo-SEM surcharge $20 per day (ANU)
$50 External

NEW GRANT APPLICATIONS for work in 2009  - When writing ARC and NH&MRC grant proposals, applicants are asked to cost electron microscopy instrument time at $80 per hour, of which $25 is to be paid as a direct cost to the ANUEMU and $55 may be counted as an "indirect cost" to the University.  

For cryo-microscopy charges, other grants, and where it may be appropriate to include a component for capital equipment purchase or replacement, please contact the EMU.
